This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach the best group of kiddos in the world. My class is a SAILS classroom (Succeeding in Academic and Independent Living Skills) supporting special needs students in grade K-5. They are very special to me. My students are loving, hard-working, and have the best personalities. They find the good in every situation and don't allow their individual disabilities to hold them back.

I currently have 10 students with various disabilities such as autism, speech delays, various learning disabilities, emotional disturbances, and medical challenges.

A few of my students have multiple impairments.

My school is a Title 1 campus in a low-income neighborhood. Many of the parents struggle to make ends meet. With the onset of virtual learning, many of my students and parents are very overwhelmed trying to adapt to the virtual setting. I would love to add more appropriate resources to my classroom to ensure students are as successful online as they would be in the classroom.

My Project

Most of my students are working from home due to the pandemic. This alone puts them at a disadvantage because they need the structure and hands-on experiences they get in the classroom. In addition to adjusting to the virtual classroom, they have to now share space with siblings and others in the home which often causes higher distractions for my students. By providing them noise-canceling headphones they will be able to filter out distracting sounds as well as be able to talk through a microphone when interacting in the online classroom. Having their own headphones will also allow them to make quiet time to ease anxiety by blocking out other noises they otherwise would not be able to process as easily.
