My Students

How many times have we been told that "you can't judge a book by it's cover?" Yet, that's something we've all been guilty of at some time in our reading lives.

My students attend a suburban high school of about 2400 students, and not unlike many teens, they are often reluctant readers.

Their struggles with reading make them even more inclined to profess, "I don't like reading." When confronted with an entire library full of books they are quickly overwhelmed and frequently struggle with finding materials of individual interest to them. As a result, students will often choose books according to size and cover art which doesn't always lead to having chosen a title of interest to them.

My Project

These resources will allow me to cultivate a classroom library of high-interest reading materials for my students. Within this environment students will have increased time to interact with and select books of interest to them. Our activity is two fold. To begin, students will choose a book following a series of book talks and book perusals. Then, once they have finished the title they will wrap their book and decorate the wrapping to include no more than three key words in preparation for our "Blind Date with a Book" event. Here, students will select a second title completely based upon those brief descriptions. My students will learn that books can be playgrounds for the imagination and, throughout the year, hopefully come to develop a new-found appreciation for reading.

Reading is a life-long skill of critical importance.

Research shows that the more one reads the better one becomes at it. Yet, for struggling readers, the desire to read is often limited. Exposing students to these engaging titles will demonstrate that reading CAN be worth the struggle promoting increased reading and skills development.
