Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is one of the most ethnically diverse schools in the Philadelphia region. Our students come from a variety of different cultural and economic backgrounds representing many third world countries. Students speak a multitude of languages including English, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Arabic. Although our families are hard-working and dedicated, many of these wonderful students suffer under the weight of generational poverty.

Although the teaching methods and environments vary, the students in my classroom love learning.

They are truly an incredible group. As English Language Learners, a majority of my students struggle to keep pace with their english-speaking peers.

In order to maximize a student's learning potential, we incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating. Unfortunately, sometimes our best efforts fall short, and we struggle without many of the basic resources. However, our students soldier on!

My Project

Education continues to evolve and undergo revolutionary changes every single day. One of the biggest areas of change within the educational realm is the way in which math instruction is delivered to our students. Studies have proven that every student learns differently. This statistic demands that all areas of instruction, including math, must be tailored to an individual student's learning style. These fraction towers will go a long way in helping students absorb and adapt to the changing world of math. Whether working with equivalencies, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions, determining ratios, or percentages these blocks will provide an opportunity for students to engage in practical application.

In addition, the bluetooth speaker will create a third dimension of learning to our Power Point projector presentations.

Currently, when we engage in Power Point presentations, we have no access to voice projections. When we depend on the laptop volume, the sound is weak and sometimes totally inaudible. As a result, students who rely on auditory absorption of instruction are left at a disadvantage. Including this bluetooth speaker into our repertoire of strategies, makes it possible to broaden the number and types of lessons I can deliver via this modality. In addition, students will now be able to engage in their own power point presentations, theatre productions, and group projects.
