My Project

I work in a small title one school in Wasilla, Alaska. COVID has set our students far behind with many reading at below a 3rd grade average. In an attempt to focus on reading, writing, and math our district has reduced our time spent on science, social studies, art, and health to the bare minimum. By the time 4/5th graders get to me, their core science and art knowledge is minimal. Last year we made life-size paper pals. Students placed organs and bones in an attempt to learn basic anatomy and body functions. This year I would like to give them the universe. Research has shown that giving students time in STEAM activities not only improves attendance, but also gives them a greater understanding of core subjects and the world around them. With my classroom transformation, I'm hoping to show my small town kids how big the universe really is and how much they can change it. We will need to do a lot of fundraising for their end of elementary trip to the Kenai Space Center, class t-shirts, and other things that 5th graders should enjoy.

We will need the Cricut machine for end of year t-shirts, creating fundraising items, customizing planet 'teams' and in-class crafts.

I selected the books below because they are handy resources for lesson plans and in-class experiments. Students also love to learn with rapid-fire quick facts that they can learn and repeat.

Coloring books are planetary themed and will allow students time to practice art for when we later design our own planets and solar systems.

Classroom mail organizers will allow students to easily stash paper projects so they are not crumpled, ruined, or destroyed in their cubbies or desks.

Décor items will allow us to darken the room and more readily become explorers.
