My Students

My kids have been working hard all year, and now we're going to really show our potential by blasting rockets high into the sky!

My students are an awesome group of 3rd graders who have a lot of difficulties in their young lives.

All of the students in my class are from immigrant families, some are Hispanic and others are refugees from countries like Sudan, Iraq, Somalia, Pakistan, Nepal, and a few more. They are such sweet kids and have a great deal of potential. However, I also realize the realities of the neighborhood in which they live. The chances of them making it to college are very slim, and as they leave our school, I want them to really be ready for the difficulties that are going to confront them afterward.

My Project

On our wall in our classroom, we have been charting student progress in math. For whatever reason, my students struggle a great deal with math, but we all have the goal of mastering 80% of our math objectives. They are on all sides of the spectrum. However, I want to follow through with that goal and really push them to get to 80%, even those who are currently very far away from the goal. I believe that one way I can inspire them to work harder is to have an incentive for mastery. If they can show me that they can reach 80% by the end of the year, they will be able to launch a rocket into the sky and ponder for a small moment on their limitless potential.

I know that if we are judging this project by its cover, it might look a little cheesy, but I know that it will mean the world to my students.

They love rockets and space and I know that with your help I can harness that energy into academic and life successes.
