My Students

As a teacher in a low-income, high poverty school district, I work with students who are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking for a way children can be themselves and learn through play at all ages.

This project will benefit ALL the children in the school.

My school is made up of over 800 children from Pre-K to 5th grade. All children receive free breakfast and free lunch. My school is rated above average in school quality compared to other schools in New York. Students here perform above average on state tests, are making above average year-over-year academic improvement, and our school has about average results in how well it is serving disadvantaged students.

My Project

This “Sensory Path” is made to send kids out of this world! From the countdown to “Blast Off” this interactive path takes kids through a universe of learning and sensory integration! They will tip toe through the gravity zone on letters A-Z, then space jump from planet to planet until they reach the moonwalk! Kids love to “reach” for the stars as they travel across the moon. Finally ending with “one small step for man” and a few “giant leaps for mankind” this sensory path ends with a moonwalk back to class!

The “Blast Off” Sensory Path has vibrant colors, and bold rich graphics to brighten your sensory area while engaging the student’s interest.

This sensory path package comes with enough elements to stretch 80-100 feet. Designed to change the child’s body position as he/she completes the course, it has the child focus on academic visuals, while moving the body in a specific order. As the child moves through the path, the body movements slow down or speed up, but work towards giving the proper sensory input without overstimulating the student.

Children need a brain break. By taking children to use the Sensory Path, they will complete a series of movements as they move through the path that is designed to release the blocked paths and allow the body and brain to refocus. The Sensory Path will be designed in the hallway on the 3rd floor for all students to participate and enjoy.
