My Students

Learning solely from a text book does not work for 21st Century learners. We are a STEAM school meaning all curriculum is integrated with principles of science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math. Our students live in high poverty and are best motivated with project-based learning.

Our middle school is located in a suburban area and serves a diverse population of students between sixth and eighth grades.

43% of our learners are English language learners. They respond very well to lessons where they are actively involved in their own learning because they are building life experiences to which they can anchor their learning, making it more relevant. Rich experiences like our Medieval Festival excite the students about learning world history because they create their own presentations and invite other grade levels as guests. They have consulted local community leaders and business owners about the math and engineering involved in creating some of the props for the festival. They applied for and interviewed for each job involved in the project.

My Project

The sixth grade social studies team has created a unit of study where the students conduct research to learn about the Medieval time period as they are creating props for the festival. They study the different levels of the feudal system and create presentation boards for the festival. The physical education department plans games for the day, and teams of students build catapults for competition. Every team has a different job to accomplish in preparation for the day. The team building experience gained from this project makes such a positive impact of the students. However, they are not the only ones who will benefit. All proceeds from the competition will go to local charities chosen by the students. The supplies we are asking for will be used to create models of castles, manors, and farms, a life size model of a knight, artifacts from the lives of kings, serfs, and nobles. Students will create a banner for each catapult team with a crest highlighting their chosen charity.

The donations will improve the classrooms of the entire sixth grade because all students will be involved in the making of props for the day.

The active learning will create lasting knowledge of Medieval history long after the test is over. The sixth graders have, for the first time, left the elementary level where students all know each other, and learn alongside students from other elementary schools. Friendships are forged when they construct models and knowledge together.
