My Students

My students are eager to learn and excited to come to school! They seek out emotional and academic support at school. School is a home away from home for us all. We learn social skills alongside learning academic skills.

This next year, I will have an especially diverse class.

I will teach a first and second-grade split classroom. I took time to get to know some of the students last year. Some students are still working on letter sounds, while others are reading on a fourth-grade level. Some students prefer to work alone, while others love to solve problems with their friends. While most of my students are black, some are white and some are Mexican or Latino.

My Project

Books have a powerful voice in the classroom. They encourage students' social growth, and change their mindset.

I am requesting titles that promote diversity, pride, and activism for my mostly black students.

I chose books based on their reading level, so that many students could read the books independently or with a partner. In the future, I hope to include higher level books in a project, too.

This year we will discuss issues like discrimination, racism, and gender inequality, and books are a catalyst for this discussion. These books may help support my students in thinking about how to combat injustices in our world.
