My Students

My students attend a low income urban school in Philadelphia.

They are a multiracial group of students who hail from Black, White, Latino/Hispanic, Middle Eastern, and Asian backgrounds, many of whom will be the first in their families to face the challenges of attending high school, college, and beyond.

They are academic and driven young adults who are determined to reach the heights of achievement in college, despite a series of systemic disparities and barriers of race and class they face every day.

My Project

By reading these books through lenses provided by Progressive Era Black thinkers and activists, students will analyze the characters, plot, and author's intent with the ideas of W.E.B. Du Bois, Booker T. Washington, Ida B. Wells, and Marcus Garvey in mind. Doing so will empower them to read literature more critically than they have before, and prepare them for their next three years of high school as well as their later academic careers in college.

Long-term social change is enacted not by catchy political slogans or through committed educators, but through our youth reading books, educating themselves, and maintaining a society built upon the ideals of a multi-racial democracy.

My students need these books. Be a part of that change. Make it happen.
