My Students

"Black Power simply means: Look at me, I’m here. I have dignity. I have pride. I have roots. I insist, I demand that I participate in those decisions that affect my life and the lives of my children. It means that I am somebody."

—Whitney M Young.

MBHS is a screened school that prides itself on its rigorous academic standards and diverse community. Six years ago, a small group of students came together to start The MBHS Black Student Union as they saw a need to build cultural and social awareness and create a space where students could express themselves. Historically, BSU sought to be an advocacy base to fight for equal rights in the times of civil unrest especially as colleges were beginning to diversify; to unite a people by developing a national consciousness around the notion of Black or Blackness or the validity of Blackness; and to uplift the culture, intellect, passion, and spirit of Black people.

Today, through a celebration of culture and history, the MBHS BSU strives to help students of all backgrounds continue that mission. It is through the understanding of differences that we can all come together for a common goal.

My Project

One of the goals of BSU is to form workshops in school to educate students on Black culture, social issues, and build an inclusive school community. One of the ways in which we hope to accomplish this is by researching our culture.

This year, we will be visiting historical sites and monuments as well as HBCUs in Alabama from March 5th through March 8th.

However, we need help obtaining accommodations so as to not make this trip burdensome to our students and their families.

Touring Birmingham, Selma, Montgomery, and Tuskegee, students will immerse themselves in the strength of their ancestors who fought for them to have opportunities today. In viewing historical sites such as the Brown Chapel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, Edmund Pettus Bridge, and The National Memorial for Peace and Justice and exploring the legacy of the civil rights era in Alabama, they hope to further venture into learning about their roots beyond what is taught in the classrooms. They are excited to learn about different perspectives and develop cultural awareness.

Also, as our students enter the world, they find it important to be able to form a solid foundation of their culture, history, and place in America. Visiting HBCUs will allow them to explore the importance of education in African American culture while learning about the culture and traditions of a variety of HBCUs.

Students will receive an experience that will benefit their sense of self and identity and will be able to utilize this knowledge to benefit their peers and society at large.
