Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from different socioeconomic backgrounds, cultures, and countries. They range from general education, special education, and ESL students who are just learning the English language. My students have some of the most beautiful souls and often help fellow classmates that are struggling.

I believe that every single student has a purpose in my classroom and can be successful.

As their teacher, I always try to find a way to boost my students' self-esteem, practice what it means to truly love yourself, be accepting of others, and find a love for science.

My Project

Harriet Tubman, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, George Washington Carver, Nelson Mandela, Oprah. These are the common names and faces of Black History Month. All of these people are noteworthy and should be mentioned, but are these our only choices? Something a colleague, friend, and mentor stresses are that history is often depicted from one perspective and point of view. We study the same people every February, but there are so many more accomplishments that need to be recognized.

I believe it is important for students to acknowledge that people of color, both men and women, have made paramount scientific discoveries and inventions that affect our everyday lives.

I often ask my students to draw and describe a scientist or inventor. 99% of my students will give me a depiction of a white male resembling Albert Einstein. While there is nothing wrong with this depiction, I want them to see the importance all cultures and peoples bring to our everyday lives...I want my students to see themselves and how they can one day make their community and world a better place to live.

With the materials and books I've added to my project, I'm hoping my students will be able to find a black scientist or inventor that has impacted their life. The books I've selected range from grades 3-12 which covers most of my students' reading levels. A poster with some information allows students to get up and see some inventions and scientists available to research. Having a set of books in Spanish will allow some of my English Language Learners an opportunity to see the power and influence of a young child and how anyone can become an engineer and solve a problem.
