Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Many of my students have experienced direct trauma, and ALL their lives are shaped by the crime and poverty present in their environment.
The challenges my students face give urgency to my work, and they push me everyday to become a better educator.
Despite the challenges they face, my class is a pretty incredible bunch. They care deeply for one another, they love to read, and they work hard at math. Although resources in their lives and at school are scarce, they share generously. One student found five dollars on the ground and, without a second thought, handed it to me to find the owner!
My Project
My students are LOVING learning about notable Black people as part of Black History Month. We have been using youtube to listen to many of the stories in Brad Meltzer's "I Am..." series. Students are inspired by the lives and stories of Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Having physical copies of these powerful stories for our classroom library will be SO exciting for students.
They will be able to enjoy the books independently, and revisit their heroes' stories whenever we have independent reading time. Having these books will also increase the diversity of characters represented in our classroom books, making the class library more reflective of our class community.
To go along with the "I Am..." books, I am asking for an "I Am..." journal for each of my students. These journals contain prompts to help each child see that they can change the world. This message aligns with my own mission to empower my students of Color, and these journals will enrich our daily writing time immeasurably.
