My Students

My students attend a neighborhood public school in South Philadelphia. The students that attend my school are from diverse racial, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds. While I primarily teach kindergarten-the goal of this project is to impact all of the students in the school from grades K-8.

My Project

This workshop will help me grow personally as an educator as well as help my colleagues and school. In many schools, Black history is being isolated and taught just in the month of February. In order to truly lead anti-racist lives and build anti-racist schools, our children need to be taught Black history all year long because it is American history. We need to move away from the singular narratives of oppression and tell a more complete story.

In order to do this effectively, many educators need to relearn American history themselves.

We need to examine the history of racism and anti-racism in our country and examine with our colleagues the kinds of texts and conversations we should be having with students in ALL grades ALL year long.
