My Students

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world" -Nelson Mandela. A typical day in my classroom can be challenging when my students lack basic needs such as pencils and sharpeners. I would like to provide my students with the materials that they need to be successful.

My school is a Title I school with 100% of our students receiving free breakfast and lunch.

My students live in an inner-city area where basic needs are difficult to meet, and therefore, they cannot solely focus on learning to the best of their ability. As a class, we need so much and need to let our creative juices flow. Although we might not come in with a lot of background, my students have a love of learning and learn best when they are presented with material in multiple ways. I feel that it is important to give them access to different resources and activities to help to meet their individual needs. Many of my students have challenges such as learning disabilities, ESOL students, or being hearing and visually impaired. Their assignments have to be more specialized in order to meet their needs.

My Project

My students enjoy having conversations about Black history and Black heritage. They especially enjoy learning about people who have made contributions to the fight for equality, those who have excelled in areas where they were the first African American to do so, and those who have been entrepreneurs. We also enjoy watching movies that have been based on books we have read.

This project will explore the book, "Just Mercy", by Bryan Stevenson and former president Barack Obama's book ,"Promised Land".

I have created other projects for "Just Mercy", but our school has about 200 7th and 8th graders and I want each of them to have their own copy. We plan to continue the discussions throughout the remainder of this school year.
