My Project
My students are the best, and mostly students of color. This project comes out of the necessity that is students of color, getting to consistently see themselves included and in a positive manner. We are currently teaching about the Civil War, and each time usually whether it's this time in history or not, a person of color is usually portrayed as a slave. During the month of February, their faces have lit up making posters, seeing books about them on display, singing songs, and learning about people of color's, ideas, music, and inventions they may not have known about.
After the month of February, it seems that Black History goes by the wayside, and it's back to "the way things were."
I don't want to as the children say today, "ride a wave." It is my fondest desire to have things like the skin toned construction paper, and coloring materials of this project as a constant in my classroom. To have Band-Aids that match their color when they scrape their knees on the playground. For them to get to see what an HBCU is, because we say in our school's mission statement everyday that, "We will one day graduate from High School, College, or Trade School." We have a class ticket store, where positive affirmation bracelets will be added, allowing them to have positive words as a fashionable reminder. The books in this project will give ideas and printable material on how to show the students of color (with decorum) even more about who they were, and who they could be... constantly showing them their best. Isn't that what teaching is all about?
