This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a Title I school in the Bronx. Our students are categorized as "highest-need," coming from low-income families, many of which are immigrants or new to the country/city. Our students are recipients of free lunch services and receive instructional accommodations such as English as a Second Language, Special Education, Honors courses, and supplemental extra-curricular programming.

We are committed to achieving academic success for all students and empowering self-reliant learners through collaboration and community relationships.

We are Latin@-American, African-American, Asian-American, and European-American. We are Islanders and Mainlanders. We are wonderers and questioners. We are hopers and dreamers. We are students are teachers. We are actors!

My Project

Our new Drama program is being moved to a new classroom for the 2016-2017 school year. The Drama department has a lofty vision for the next five years, and that includes transforming a mundane middle school classroom into an innovative and flexible performance venue.

Anyone can do theater, even actors; And, theater can be done everywhere, even in a theater -Augusto Boal.

A Black Box Theater would allow for quality performing arts instruction to take place in its natural environment while doubling as a theater studio for after school rehearsals and performances.

BLACK FOAM TILES will interlock on the floor to form a padded floor, distinguishing the "playing space" from the audience seating/student work space. This easy to clean material will also be a welcoming space for students to sit when watching videos in class or during a warm up activity or group stretch.

A pair of PIPE and DRAPE structures will serve to block off the "playing space" and to create theatrical effect. Students will use the draping as curtains in order to heighten the effect of entering and exiting a scene. Curtains will also help create a backstage area for actors to use during a performance. The effect of the curtains will really create the feeling of working within a real theater.

Lastly, CONVERTIBLE SEATING would act as audience house and student seats. These seats are multi-functional within a classroom. In our Black Box, red seating mimics the kind of chairs Broadway patrons regularly enjoy. The flexible seating systems allow for collective audience viewing as well as a feature that transforms benches into seats with tables. These unique tables add an amazing look and feel to a performance/learning space.
