My Students

My school is a true melting pot of culture, economic status, homes, and families. This school is considered high poverty; over 60% of our students are economically disadvantaged, and our school has now qualified for free lunch and breakfast for our students.

We have over 10 different cultural backgrounds in our classroom with such diversity as Alaska Native, Samoan, Russian, and American Indian.

While studying Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one of my students answered the question, "What do you think Dr. King would say about our classroom?" One answered, "He would say that our class is his dream come true." This is exactly right. We are such a wonderful mix of persons.

My Project

There is an amazing resource that allows teachers to create take-home science kits. This allows the family to make some amazing science experiments together at home.

This project will give the students the supplies to make ice cream in a bag, build a sundial, and conduct fun experiments with balloons and parachutes.

These are tried and true simple experiments for students to do with their families when they get home. They love getting them, and I enjoy assembling them for their birthday.

Science often gets the short end of the stick in school with the focus on language arts and math. These science kits allow for science exploration. And I promise the pop rocks are really for a science experiment!
