Birds of a Feather

Help me give my students an up-close look at the many bird species that live around our school with a smart bird feeder with camera. Bird adaptation is a standard we teach in third grade science.

My Project

The students love observing the birds at our rural school using the binoculars. I would love to give them that next step and allow them to see how the birds use their beaks to break open seeds, etc. They will explore the differences from one bird species to another. This will also bring the students closer to nature in a way that allows them to connect with nature in a more meaningful way. Students learn best by doing. They will have the responsibility of maintaining the bird feed and learning when in the spring they need to bring the bird feeder back inside to avoid attracting bears to the feeders.

In the past we have been able to borrow a trail camera for a few weeks to study mammal activity.

The students were so much more engaged with the lesson when they had that hands-on experience and real life connection. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
