Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Here in the most diverse county in the world, Queens, I am lucky that I can learn so much about the world through our school's families. My students and their families come from over two dozen countries and speak nearly a dozen languages. While they come here with the common goals to learn English and have more opportunities, one other important thing brings us together - BIRDS!

No matter where my students are from, they understand that birds are an important part of our cultural identities.

I teach them biology, ecology, how humans impact biodiversity, and what we can do about it, all through the lens of birds. They teach one another, and me, about how birds play a role in the language and culture of their native countries.

My Project

I want to engage students and help them with engaging families by extending student research beyond our state to their home countries. This will engage them to learn about the species that make their home country special and give them something authentic to share and learn about from their families. That is why I am requesting bird books in their native languages and field guides to the birds from their home countries. It is vital that I teach my students about birds by bringing them outdoors so we can see birds in their habitats. It is equally as vital that my students also learn about the birds and the threats they face in their home countries, as well.

During our family night this fall, I want my students to present research about birds from their home countries to their families.

By connecting their research about New York's birds to the birds of their home countries, families and students will see themselves represented in our curriculum, and the value our school places on their culture and experience.

Everywhere I have traveled in the world, people want to talk about birds - please help me make that connection with our families and donate the books we need to make it happen!
