My Project

Our fifth grade classroom has a small fenced in garden behind our building. In the past years, the students have worked to plant and cultivate a native garden to invite small animals to enjoy the micro-ecosystem we have created. Fifth grade science focuses on environmental science and the overall impact humans have on ecosystems. Our classroom studies our local ecosystem, as well as the Yellowstone and the American Short Grass Prairie, these areas being important to the Native American tribes of south-central Montana. I am able to provide a connection to the ancestors of my students. We discuss the importance of all species of plants and animals for the health of the ecosystem as a whole, as well as how they supported the lives of the tribes.

These materials will help students observe local birds and make them more aware of the local biological diversity that visits our school garden throughout the seasons, the migration patterns, the symbiosis of organisms to survive harsh winters, and become more attentive to their local environment in general as it applies to the success of tribal communities of the past and present.

Together, I hope students will begin to appreciate that all organisms, big and small, have an important place in our world and that we need to work together to preserve them.
