My Students

Living in a small rural community my students easily associate agriculture with farming. I'm trying to teach them agriculture also includes many promising careers in important careers such as science, business, and biotechnology. Our ability to complete labs with actual equipment is hampered.

The school is in a small town of 1400 people.

The high school serves approximately 180 students. During the day I see about half of them in my agriculture classes. Many students take more than one class with me. Our students do very well on state tests but I think they can be challenged more. They are always willing to try new things and make suggestions about things we should try in class. I have so many ideas that I think would inspire them and make learning more fun than sitting in a classroom.

My Project

The Electrophoresis Kit is used to sequence DNA, kind of like on the TV show CSI. It is used in biotechnology to research genes and has a variety of applications. The basic kits would provide students with an understanding of a process that is sometimes to difficult to comprehend. The kits can be adapted and used for a variety of experiments by buying different kits and DNA samples. I hope to give students the idea that biotechnology is not some scary science and that they could have an excellent career in a bio-tech area in the future. Also, hands-on learning is the best kind and would provide students with real-world application of information in the textbook.

Our school is a small school with limited resources and no lab supplies in the agriculture department.

When I tell students there are great careers in agriscience I have nothing to back it up in class. The electrophoresis kits can show them they can be the next scientists in an area that will be in high demand as the human population increases and our resources on this planet are stretched thinner and thinner.
