My Students

Agriculture is the largest industry in North Carolina and I want my students to be exposed to the opportunities. Agriculture offers careers in production, research, development and distribution.

Students at our high school come from very diverse background.

85% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. 60% are African American, 20% Hispanic, 20% other. Agriculture is a career based, hands-on curriculum that applies direct science and adds relevancy to subjects such as biology, chemistry and earth science in addition to culinary arts. These items will help students study at a deeper level.

My Project

My students come from very poor families, frequently with poor health habits. It is my goal to establish a link between farm and garden to their food choices. I will use the microscope to study plants and animals at a microscopic level where most of the work is done in nature. If you understand the relationship between soil and plant/animal production you can produce more food, more efficiently. Universities are looking for students with these skills. The bee life display will help me teach the importance of pollinators in the environment and how their decline has impacted agriculture. All of these tools will be helpful in creating a great educational environment in my lab.

These products will help me teach at a higher level to make sure my students get the best education I can provide.

They may come from a disadvantaged environment but they are smart, and with the right tools they can be very successful. Thank you for considering my project.
