My Students

Our school is located in one of the most economically depressed congressional districts in our country. To complicate matters, the Mayor and Chancellor recently announced that we are facing additional budget cuts for next semester.

Our small South Bronx school, services students primarily from the surrounding neighborhood.

They represent a multiculturally diverse and disadvantaged urban population. Many are recent immigrants who struggle not only to learn the subject matter, but also to acclimate to a new culture and language. We also have a very large Special Needs population that has difficulty with the complex science concepts. Special Needs students and English Language Learners learn best by doing. Biotechnology appeals to these students because it provides many hands-on experiences. As they progress through the course, students learn how to apply their knowledge to real-world situations. They also develop critical thinking and analytical skills. All of these life skills will serve our students well in college. Biotechnology may also open the door on career opportunities beyond college.

My Project

Biotechnology is an ever-growing field, but unfortunately, it's very expensive. We were granted a complete biotechnology lab through very generous donations from DonorsChoose several years ago. But everything wears out eventually. Some of the critical units must now be replaced to maintain the program. In order to continue providing my students with biotechnology experiences, we need to replace worn-out power units for our gel electrophoresis equipment. We also need to replace some of the gel electrophoresis chambers that are the backbone of our laboratory activities. Your donations will help us keep biotechnology in our curriculum. We cannot replace these supplies without your help.

We need your support to make it happen.

Help us to provide learning experiences and opportunities for those most in need. Help us to open doors. Thank you for support science education in our public schools.
