My favorite part about teaching is getting to enjoy my student's personalities. Each one of my students has their own individual and strong personality. No two student is the same which means that each student brings something different to the classroom. I like to step back quietly and just observe them interacting with each other. Like I said before, they have strong personalities and aren't afraid to let them shine. I truly appreciate this quality about them.
My Biotechnology students are incredibly curious.
They are always asking questions in order to dig deeper into the topic we are on. This often leads to impromptu class discussions. Sometimes I'll have a student who knows a nuance about our current topic and will get excited and tell it to the class. I love when I learn something too!
My Project
I've chosen kits that will help them be able to do the most common biotechnology and microbiology lab procedures: restriction digestions, transformation, purification, and gel and polyacrylamide electrophoresis. I've also chosen these particular kits because they are the coolest way to learn these techniques. Our ultimate goal is to insert a gene for bioluminescence (from a jellyfish) into bacterial cells. If done correctly we will make bacteria glow!
I want to give my students a chance to get hands on experience at learning how to conduct the most common biotechnology lab procedures.
With these skills they will be able to apply for internships with confidence.
