My students are enrolled in a Career and Technical Education Program in Biotechnology. My school students enter this 2-year program in 11th grade and take a total of 4 biotechnology courses as they work towards completion of an Industry recognized Level-I Certificate in Biotechnology. This certification can lead to employment in the bioscience industry as a biotechnician.
My Project
The current biotechnology job market is robust and is expected to grow faster than the average for most occupations in the coming years. Therefore, there is a critical need for well-trained students to fill jobs in this industry and this project intends to work towards meeting this need. The overarching goal of this project is to provide access to state-of-the-art laboratory equipment to accommodate hands-on, real-world workforce training, and authentic research experience for my biotechnology students by providing access to research laboratory and industry-level instrumentation, and technology. My biotechnology students will be trained on this equipment as they complete an Industry recognized Level-I Certificate in Biotechnology. Specifically, the requested items will be used by students as they work through my biotechnology curriculum to develop job skills and industry-level instrumentation competencies. Currently, my laboratory classroom lacks these items due to their high cost and many of the lab techniques that students learn that would use these items are done in a virtual format rather than with the actual equipment. This Project intends to close that equipment gap and turn those virtual experiences into real experiences.
