My Students

Incorporating literacy into the science classroom is always a challenge, but with this book, "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks", my students will be able to put a historical perspective on a biological topic. It is an excellent book to illustrate many important scientific principles.

Students at our school are a diverse group of artistically gifted young people.

They are admitted to the school (a county-wide magnet school) based on auditions in the areas of dance, visual arts, vocal, creative writing, theater, and musical instruments (piano, strings, band). They are a creative group of individuals that incorporate their art into their academic classes as well. The students attend our school from sixth grade until they graduate from high school, giving them an opportunity to form close relationships with each other and their teachers. Since it is a county-wide magnet school, students come from a variety of backgrounds. All races and socioeconomic backgrounds are in attendance at our school.

My Project

The students in my advanced biology classes (AP Biology and Honors Biology 2) cover many topics over the course of the year, and the book "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" will be an immensely important addition to the curriculum. I could not put the book down when I read it, and I want to offer my students the same engrossing experience. The book provides perspective on many topics in biology, including cells, cell growth, cancer, laboratory practices, and ethics. My students will be able to gain real life perspectives on each of these topics. By including a literacy component to the curriculum, it encourages each student to learn and analyze in different ways while offering them a book that is not typically covered in an English course. This will provide many different assessment opportunities as well, including lively debates on the ethics behind human cell lines.

By donating to this project, it will ensure that each of my students has the opportunity to read this phenomenal book about Henrietta Lacks, the woman from whom the first ongoing human cell line was obtained.

I want to include this book in my advanced biology curriculum, but I do not want to prevent students that may not be able to afford the book from this learning experience. By being able to give each student a copy of the book, it includes everyone in the lessons I have planned.
