Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I can't see", is a phrase that I can avoid hearing from my students if I am able to project the specimen that we are learning about that day - a fungus, germinating seeds, frog, earthworms, and much more.

My students are taking high school biology.

Most are 9th graders, but we do have some 10th, 11th, and 12th graders taking biology. For most students, this is their first experience with high school science. The amount of information they learn in one year can be overwhelming. However, my students are willing to work hard to achieve proficiency in the class and on the state exams. Our school is located in California. Most of our students are Latino/a and have low SES.

My Project

I would love to purchase a document camera to engage my students in the day's lesson. We already have a projector in the classroom. It is hooked up the classroom computer. At this time, I can only project what is on the computer. The document camera will enhance the visual presentation by allowing me to project many more things. My students are eager to learn, but it is not easy to keep their attention for the entire 60 minute period. I know that they are most engaged in the class content when they can clearly visualize our topic - decomposition, exemplars of student work, dissection techniques, the steps of protein synthesis, and much more.

My students are learning many biology topics - cells, anatomy/physiology, evolution, ecology, and genetics.

The knowledge my students gain in biology will help them succeed in future science courses, appreciate our natural world, and may inspire them to pursue a career in science.
