My Students

I teach tenth grade biology in a low-income school district with a higher than average ratio of students with disabilities. The kids relate well to biology as it is the study of life, and they are fascinated by concepts that concern them. Genetics is one of my favorite units to teach because the kids love seeing why they have a hitchhiker's thumb or widow’s peak! However, genes and alleles are an abstract concept for the kids to grasp, and interactive models of DNA really make this standard more attainable.

One of the most rewarding experiences as a teacher is to watch kids having fun while they are learning, and be disappointed when class has ended so quickly!

The students thrive when they are able to interact with each other and share knowledge. Working with DNA models is so much more engaging than reading about base pairings in a text book. I’d love to be able to bring resources like these to my students and have them used year after year.

My Project

Students are anxious to learn how alleles combine and determine the unique properties that make them who they are. They enjoy questioning each other and determining who is left handed, who has blue eyes, and who is the same height as they are. Unfortunately, once the terms alleles, genes, and DNA are introduced, the kids often get lost in the technicalities of heredity.

Students love the challenge of working with DNA models because they cannot be built unless the correct bases are paired together!

In order to reach the top, kids must remain focused and analyze their work for mistakes. The members of the group work together and are proud of the product they have to show at the end of class. The retention rate is high because this is a hands on lesson.

DNA models are a resource that will be able to be used in the classroom year after year. Lots of kids will will remained engaged and, in particular, students with disabilities will really do well with these models. They will have the playing field leveled, which is difficult to accomplish.
