As the only 4th grade language arts teacher, I have a large responsibility to create a love of reading for all of the fourth graders that are at our school. Reading is such a motivating passion in my life. I feel as if I am living out my dream each and everyday by sharing this love with my students.
My Students: We are a group of ravenous readers!
Each day you will find us engaged in lively discussions or buried in our newest favorite book. By the end of the year, we hope to add onto our ever growing reading list by filling it with new experiences from our literature circles.
Our students are part of a Title I school that enrolls approximately 356 students in grades K-5. The economic free and reduced lunch program serves over 60 percent of out students. We are located in the heart of a thriving town adjacent to our state's capital city.
We have a very small school community. Most grade levels consist of only 2 teachers. Due to our small size, we become very involved with our students and we have a very family oriented environment.
These students come to school each and every day with a vibrant willingness to learn and accept new challenges. Many of these students come from economically disadvantages homes and often our students turn to us for much more than classroom education.
My Project
As we jump further into our non fiction units, we will be creating biography boards depicting famous figures of the past and present. In order to do this, we need up to date biographies on important figures we can recognize and relate to! Often times our biography choices are so outdated that students have a hard time gaining enthusiasm for reading them.
This project will make a huge impact on my students.
Many of my students do not have access to difference types of reading materials outside of school. They lack exposure to different genres and ideas. Not having to share a copy of a book will allow students to take more ownership over their learning and will also allow them the excitement of a new story. Opening a new book is such a wonderful experience to witness and having the ability to give them a choice in reading materials will be amazing
