My Students

My middle school students are bright, funny, and engaging, and they love their library! They come from a Los Angeles neighborhood where many struggle with poverty, language barriers, and the realities of modern urban life.

Our library program is committed to educating all students with a focus on teaching college and career ready skills, encouraging personal growth, promoting lifelong learning, and honoring diversity.

Our school’s enrollment is approximately 1,600 students, and the library serves the entire school population. All of the students at our school receive federal breakfast and lunch programs. In addition, approximately 26% of the students are English language learners. There is a group foster home right across the street from our school, so a number of our students are foster youth. Approximately 15% of our students have special needs, as we have a variety of great Special Education programs at our school. Our school's ethnic makeup reflects the diversity of the surrounding community: Latino, African American, Asian, and Caucasian.

My Project

My students are eager and avid readers. The biography area of the library is their favorite nonfiction section, and they frequently request to read updated books about people that are relevant and interesting to them. Unfortunately, the average date of our library's biography section is 1996, 22 years old, and is in need of a refresh.

An updated, culturally relevant, and engaging biography section will encourage my students to learn about people who have made a difference in this world and hopefully inspire them to do the same.

A fun bookcase in our school's color will give our new books a place to call home and allow me to create compelling displays to entice my students to read even more biographies that they may have missed had the books been integrated with the rest of the nonfiction.

My students love to read about the lives of others. Biographies comprise twenty-five percent of our current library circulation. With your help, my students will soon be reading new life stories that I hope will boot their confidence, knowledge, and desire to do good.
