Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Almost all of my students come from underprivileged backgrounds. The total minority enrollment is 95%, and the official number of students who are economically disadvantaged is 81% (underestimate.) Despite being keenly aware of the daunting odds facing them, my students show up and work hard to make their dreams come true. It is humbling to see kids come to school with focus and determination knowing some of them are living in shelters, foster homes and other incredibly difficult circumstances. They are by and large good kids- well behaved, kind, thoughtful, intelligent, creative, responsible- each with gifts that can benefit society.

Jose is a student who told me that wanted to be a surgeon.

Based on my experience in the medical field I though he would be a great fit- Jose has all the raw material necessary to achieve his goal. I encouraged him 100%, and offered to help by creating a Pre-Med club where I would share my expertise in bio-research and educate Jose and others what the road to med school entailed. Several weeks later I found out Jose had lost his father to COVID in 2020, and that his mother just became paralyzed from the waste down.

My Project

After 30 years at the bench working at some of the best research institutes in NYC, I have the expertise to teach my students cutting edge science. However, our school does not have resources for a molecular biology or microbiology lab.

Fortunately, exciting new areas of research lie in bio-computing.

There is an enormous amount of data available on pubmed and other sites that can be mined in computer based research. This project will enable students to do real cutting edge research as they are introduced to this exciting field. The human genome project is old news now, and we now have the ability to sequence the entire human genome in hours time. Furthermore example, single cell sequencing using 10X technology has made available huge amounts of data on the RNA level- just begging to be analyzed in new and exciting ways.

By taking advantage of this exciting opportunity- my students can strengthen their college applications and demonstrate they are indeed pre med material. I also anticipate that they will be able to publish their work, and compete in contests like the Regeneron Science Talent Search.
