My Project

My second graders love getting out in nature as part of our science studies! Despite living in an urban environment, they are keen observers of the natural world and we currently use nature journals as a way to hone their observational and descriptive skills. As we move into a study focused on birds, my students need binoculars to zoom in on what they are seeing in the sky! Beginner binoculars will allow them to differentiate bird sizes, silhouttes, and patterns/markings. One set of more advanced binoculars will help me to spot things to point out to them. They also need magnifying glasses to observe plants, insects and up close. Finally, in order to record their observations, they need more durable nature journals!

When students learn outdoors they are more engaged and motivated to learn, plus observing nature builds their science and cognitive skills!

Learning outdoors with observational tools will benefit my students in many ways. Being able to use binoculars and magnifying glasses will not only bring the natural world closer, but it will also motivate them to look more closely. As my students start to notice the differences between a seagull and a starling, they will be making connections that will serve them for years to come in science class and beyond.

A big part of my outdoor education focus is on helping students to become environmental stewards. The more they discover the wonder of the world, the more they will be motivated to protect it! Help us to see the world up close and personal!
