My Students

My students are innovative, positive and hard workers. 7th Grade Science can be a tough subject, but each day my students come in ready to tackle new challenges and learn more about the world around them.

My students love hands on activities.

We end each unit with an engineering project. So far this year, we have created houses to withstand “hurricane like” conditions, created roller coasters, and had a “rover” land on “Mars”, via an egg drop. I believe that written tests are only one way to show competence in a subject, and try to provide a variety of ways for students to showcase newfound knowledge.

Our school is the largest middle school in our district serving almost 1200 students. It is also the most diverse. Having students from all different walks of life is a challenge at times but very rewarding. Our school does an amazing job ensuring that every child is known and valued with a host of Social and Emotional strategies, including a “House System.” Each child is placed in a house in sixth grade and is in charge of ensuring that the sixth graders under them feel welcomed and included.

My Project

A huge part of what I do is teach literacy. For students who struggle with reading, it is so important to provide information that is both relevant and accessible to my students. Because of this, I print a lot of articles from online and place in binders with section numbers for students to complete several assignments each week. The binders also serve as a great resource for students to stay caught up outside of school or if students are absent. Finally our “textbook” binders serve as a great strategy for review and reteaching.

As a science teacher, I am all about saving the environment, so being able to print a class set and place in binders for the rest of my students helps me to save paper.

I plan to use this resource for years to come, editing to include relevant information as needed.

Currently, the binders I bought at the beginning of the year are in disrepair. I would love to be able to give my students binders that would not fall apart and stand up to the frequent use of over a hundred middle schoolers every day.
