Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The goal of this project is to design and implement an organized system for storing and accessing math manipulatives in the classroom. This system will allow students to independently retrieve the tools they need during math lessons, without teacher intervention. By empowering students to choose and manage their own manipulatives, the project aims to foster greater autonomy and self-reliance in math problem-solving.

A key benefit of this approach is its alignment with the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) testing environment, where students are not provided with direct guidance on which manipulatives to use.

The project will help students develop the critical skills of independently selecting appropriate tools and applying them to solve problems—skills they will need to succeed on assessments.

The math manipulative organizer will be designed for ease of use, with clearly labeled sections and a logical system for storing different types of manipulatives (e.g., number lines, base-ten blocks, counters, geometric shapes, etc.). This system will support active, hands-on learning and prepare students for greater test-taking success by encouraging them to practice selecting their own resources, building their confidence and competence in math tasks.
