Billiteracy With Because of Winn Dixie in our Room

My Project

The third and fourth grade students in my bilingual classroom are striving to become bi-literate. They love love literature and novels, and this is the age that students go from "learning to read" to "reading to learn," and really begin to see themselves as independent readers. Because of Winn Dixie is a story that my students will be able to connect to while also introducing them to a part of the country unfamiliar to them.

Having authentic, engaging literature in both languages that they can refer to, interact with, and relate to is invaluable.

This project will provide access to a piece of high-quality literature, through with they will improve their reading fluency and comprehension as well as study grammar and writers' craft in both languages. In addition, they'll explore the ever-salient themes of friendship, courage, and compassion. In addition, having instructional support materials in both languages allows me to provide comprehension activities in both Spanish and English.
