My Students

I want my classroom to be a place where my students understand and internalize the power that science has to facilitate large scale change in society. I want my students to feel a sense of responsibility to explore the world around them and question what may seem like common knowledge.

My students are an energetic, diverse group of young men and women who challenge and lean on each other during the school year.

Many of them are hungry to learn, excited to get involved, and eager to begin leaving their mark on society, yet sometimes feel unsure about how to go about doing so. My school is a wonderful place, where most of the teachers have a dedication to their students and craft that truly leaves me in awe. The administration is very supportive of the teachers and promotes a culture of collaboration and creativity. The student population seems to feed off of the energy and passion that both the administration and staff bring to the school.

My Project

My students and I are part of the Billion Oyster Project, which is a citizen science restoration project where we are studying and monitoring oyster health, as well as the water quality of the New York Harbor. We are investigating how the water quality of the Harbor impacts the bio-diversity found within the estuary. Part of this project is to monitor, on a regular basis, the water quality in our given location, where our oyster cage has been deployed. These materials will allow my students to be able to analyze the different necessary parameters, ranging from Dissolved Oxygen to Nitrates and Phosphates found in the Flushing Bay section of the harbor. The students will then attempt to make connections between the values and how different water quality measurements affect the health of organisms found within the harbor. The students share and discuss the data with real scientists who are attempting to lobby for the integration of oyster reefs into the New York Harbor.

The donations will not only greatly enhance the science literacy of my students, but also empower them as they become an integral component of a project that has the ability to foster significant environmental change for the betterment of many.

This involvement will hopefully instill in them a sense of pride, but more importantly, a feeling of responsibility to get involved with causes that serve a greater purpose than what they thought they had the power to do.
