This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

At present, our middle school has a multitude of students belonging to different grades that speak more than one language. In fact, some of our students’ very first language was something different than English. As these students learn to translate, pronounce and juggle their own language alongside English, they also have to balance learning different topics and adjusting to a completely new culture and environment. This can be a frustrating and stressful time, and often they can feel overwhelmed, lost and alone. As a result, their language can be their refuge, and the place where they can seek comfort. These groups of students face a daily inner battle of different cultures, customs and navigate all of these while still being kids. As important as it is for them to become eloquent in the English language, it is equally as important for them to maintain their connection with their culture, and have their voices not only acknowledged, but respected.

Including diverse and multilingual books in our student's native languages to incorporate in our library collection is essential to their wellbeing, promoting literacy and shaping their voices.

Currently, our library collection only holds two languages: Spanish and Ukrainian. According to our current statistics, we have 147 students whose first language is Spanish, 15 whose first language is Russian, 14 whose first language is Ukrainian, 9 whose is Arabic, and a variety of other languages. These requested items would attempt to represent our unique students, increase our diverse collection, and show our appreciation for our students and their culture, heritage and voices amidst all the changes they experience on a daily basis. This would ensure they are not only heard, but seen as well.
