Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As a fourth grade bilingual teacher, I have my students for reading, writing, science, social studies, and math. Many of my students come from homes of non-english speaking parents and are truly trying to make it here in the city of Trenton. None of my students are on grade level for reading.

As a fourth grade teacher, it is hard to prepare these students for the NJASK standardized test. As I said, my classroom reading level ranges from K-2/3 grade. Some of my students are faced with unstable living situations, no schooling in their native countries, and parents who try, but are unable to help them in the English Language. It is assumed that fourth graders should be reading books on their level of fourth grade or at least at a third grade level. Because of this assumption, there are not enough lower leveled books to share with my class.

I have collaborated with two teachers and a Literacy Specialist to create a Readers Workshop within my classroom. This teaching strategy will allow my students to progress to higher levels of reading and to be taught at their instructional level. Leveled Guided Reading books are part of the success of this strategy. The more books they have to read at their level will result in greater reading experiences that can turn them into better readers. The leveled guided reading books I am requesting are considered to be books that are on a child's instructional reading level. A child's Instructional Reading Level is the best level for learning new vocabulary. It requires the assistance of a teacher or tutor. The word error range allowed while reading orally to the teacher is from 2 to 5 word errors per 100 words of text (95% accuracy or better), with at least 80 percent comprehension on simple recall questions about the story. This is where the best progress is made in reading. Children who are forced or permitted to attempt reading beyond the 5-word error limit soon begin to feel frustration when in an instructional setting.

The impact of your donation will be great! The books will bring some of my students closer to their grade level of reading, others on their grade level of reading, and even more above their grade level reading. I thank you in advance for your consideration of this project. The future of my students can greatly be impacted with a better ability to read.
