This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you know the feeling of immersing yourself in a great book?! My students in special education love being read to in class! However, our classroom library needs bilingual books for beginning readers! I want my students to know the joy in reading books independently.

I teach primary special education at an urban public school in Illinois.

As the primary special ed teacher, I get to work with students in the 1st through 4th grades. My students face a lot of challenges but are so incredibly eager and motivated! All of my students receive free breakfast and free or reduced lunch at school. All but one of my students are also English Language Learners - they are all learning English at school and mostly speak Spanish at home.

My Project

My students are very eager to learn how to read independently! Unfortunately, my classroom library does not have enough books - in either Spanish or English - that are at their beginning levels of reading. My readers need beginning level books that will captivate and entertain them as they acquire reading skills. My students are SO eager to read on their own - it is hard to do when so many of the books in our classroom library are too difficult for them!

I have asked for books in Spanish and English and bilingual reading comprehension workbooks for my students.

These books and resources will benefit each and every one of my students! These books will also benefit their families as my students will be able to check the books out of the library and take the books home to read and share with parents, brothers and sisters! Your generous donation will have a great impact on my students and their families! Thank you so much.
