As a bilingual Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) working across multiple campuses, I provide support to students from Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) through 5th grade, all of whom have been identified with various speech and language disorders. This project is designed to advance language development through interactive, hands-on activities. I am dedicated to using play as an effective learning tool, aiming to foster a positive therapeutic environment while addressing specific speech and language goals. My goal is to accelerate the achievement of these objectives and enhance students' communication skills in their classrooms.
To support this initiative, wordless books will encourage students to use their voice and imagination for storytelling.
Fidgets will aid in sensory and emotional regulation. Play sets will focus on developing language skills such as following multistep directions, sequencing, prepositions, verbs, storytelling, and inferencing, as well as social skills like turn-taking, initiating, and maintaining conversations. A timer will act as a visual aid to help maintain focus and manage expectations. Proper lighting will create a welcoming space, while window covers will ensure confidentiality. Mini slime items and erasers will be placed in a speech treasure box, where students can earn stickers to exchange for prizes every nine weeks. The rug will offer comfortable seating alternatives to hard chairs. Given the limited availability of Spanish speech materials, a visual communication book will support students with AAC (Alternative Augmentative Communication) needs. Additionally, a gift card to Teachers Pay Teachers will enable me to access premade materials for various activities, including literacy-based ones, and purchase digital Spanish resources such as Boom Cards.
