Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at an elementary school as a dual language first-grade teacher. My campus is a low income, at-risk school that serves over 650 students. Almost 90% of the students at this school are economically disadvantaged, and most students read below grade level. My classroom will consist of about 20 amazing students.

My classroom is full of bright, humble, and dedicated students.

I enjoy walking into my classroom and greeting my students every morning and seeing them with a big smile ready for some learning. These students look forward to exploring new and exciting learning experiences. I would want to ensure that they enjoy every minute they have inside the classroom and be able to express their thoughts, feelings, and ideas through many interactive learning opportunities.

My Project

My students are in the dual language program and are trying to master their domain language and obtain English as a second language. As a bilingual teacher, there is always a struggle when it comes to resources. I would like to provide my students with these books that focuses on fairy tales and folktales and more than anything they are bilingual books. These would be a great addition for my classroom library.

By providing the opportunity for my students to practice both languages with these bilingual books, we are also providing the opportunity for students to learn and feel that their home language is respected and appreciated .

I strongly believe that students obtain encouragement when they see familiar texts and that there is a connecting between their language and the second language they are learning. These books will also help encourage literacy, promote quality writing, improve language skills, and enhance reading enjoyment.

The containers are also items that I am inquiring to help our classroom maintain organization during literacy centers. I currently have these centers placed in ziploc bags and students have struggled to keep them neat and organize and not ready for use for the next group.
