My Students

Imagine that you go to school all day in English and speak a different language at home. You are supposed to read with your parents every night for homework, but the books your teacher sends home are in English and your parents don't speak English! What if you could bring home bilingual books?

My students are bright and cheery kindergarteners through fifth graders who love to learn!

They are learning grade-level content while also learning English. All of my students are bilingual or from bilingual families. Our school is an urban community and serves a vast majority of students from low-income households. We teach in an area of the city that experiences a lot of violence. Despite many obstacles in their personal lives and neighborhood, my students come to school excited to learn and grow! Many of my students' parents do not speak English, but they feel that education is the key to their children's success and future.

My Project

I have already purchased many bilingual books for my students. The children sign out a book to read with their parents at night and then bring it back. When they bring it back, they can choose another book to borrow. Some students borrow a new book every night! Bilingual books allow my students to bridge the gaps between English and their first languages. The books help them increase their vocabulary in both languages, as well. Parents who do not speak English can access the text in their home languages. The parents and children have lots to talk about when they both can fully understand the story. One student told me that she is teaching her mother English by reading our bilingual books together. In addition, offering these books shows my students that our school values their home languages and they should, too.

Fortunately/unfortunately, my students have already borrowed almost all of my bilingual books!

We need more bilingual books for the students to borrow. Your donation will help keep this momentum of excitement for reading and language alive for my students and their families.
