My Students

My students are fun, funny, caring students who have immigrated from halfway across the world to Brooklyn, New York and are dedicated to learning English and using their education to better their lives and the lives of their families. There is a strong Muslim presence in my neighborhood, and the school is valued by parents and community members.

The students are primarily Muslim immigrants from Yemen, Bangladesh, and Sudan.

They have a strong need for culturally and linguistically relevant literature to aid in their development as readers and writers of several languages.

My Project

Many of my students, due to coming from centers of conflict, have limited literacy in their home language. The school is opening a bilingual program in the fall of 2017 to fill in this gap, but we need literature for the students to read! Studies have overwhelmingly shown that home language literacy boosts English literacy, and that culturally relevant readings are important for literacy development.

The books I've chosen will help transform even newcomer students into fluent bilingual readers and writers!

By providing these much-needed opportunities to read, the students, who are constantly on the lookout for reading material, will be benefited enormously.
