Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello! I am a sixth grade teacher at a Title One school in Northern California. I have a really great group of English language learners for my students this year and I am hoping to help them make great strides with their language skills as well as raise their test scores and improve t heir grades.

I find that one of my biggest challenges with this group of students is getting their parents involved in their schooling and participating in their children's academic worlds. The language barrier seems to deter parents and prevents them from asking questions, coming into the classroom, and helping their children do their homework. I would like to develop a program that includes and unifies the students and their parents with the school, and works as a whole to bring progress to my students' skills and abilities.

I am planning on creating a bilingual literacy program in which students and their family members would all come to together once a month to hear stories, share stories and experiences, and write together as a family. The books I am requesting have a Spanish and English translation and will be used to introduce topics and encourage the cooperative workings of the families.

I feel that my idea will foster new ways to include families in their children's academics and build a life long desire in my students to read, write, and share stories. I am hoping that this program will grow and span across all three grade levels at my school and continue for years to come.
