This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are English Language Learners. Nearly all (98 percent) of the student population in my school is eligible for free lunch. My English Language Learners come to school ready to learn everyday, and they get very excited when they search our classroom library. Most of these students do not have books at home. The few books in our classroom library are the only books they get to read. Unfortunately, most of the books in our classroom library are at a higher reading level than my English Language Learners abilities. Due to limited resources and funding, the books we have in our classroom library are books donated by other teachers.

As a second language educator, I know how important a well-established classroom library is to all students.

In order to meet my English Language Learners reading needs and expectations, I need leveled books that range from kindergarten to second grade reading levels. Being able to share new books with my English Language Learners that are leveled for their ability would mean the world to me. English Language Learners become successful readers when they are able to practice their speaking and reading skills with books at their just right level. I want my English Language Learners to feel successful when they are reading and not feel frustrated because they are not able to find a book they can read in our classroom library.

My Project

In the fall, my classroom will be filled with approximately 25-27 kindergartners English Language Learners. Your kindness and generosity will help me to build a leveled library that will allow my English Language Learners to experience literature at their level. This project will help my English Language Learners to become more successful readers and develop a love for reading. These books will give my students opportunities to practice and improve their speaking and reading skills.

My English Language Learners need to become strong readers in kindergarten so we can bridge the gap we see happening in the upper grades.

These books will be read daily by my English Language Learners and sent home to have them practice with their parents for at least fifteen minutes every night. Thank you for considering our grant.
