Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are English Language Learners (ELLs). Nearly all (98 percent) of the student population in my school is eligible for free lunch. My ELLs are budding readers and they are bright and eager to learn.

My students love hearing new stories, while following along with a book.

They love being read to and the listening center is their favorite. My ELLs look forward to listening center all week, but unfortunately, we don't have enough books for us to utilize the listening center each week.

My Project

In the fall, my classroom will be filled with approximately 25-27 kindergarten English Language Learners. Your kindness and generosity will enable my new students to have access to a new Listening Center. Listening Center exposes students to a new vocabulary, exciting stories, and a beautiful world of imagination. With more listening center books and CDs, my ELLs will be able to participate in Listening Center every day. They will be able to enjoy many new books beyond our extremely small collection. Through the Listening Center, they will build their fluency, be exposed to more text, and, most of all, build their love for literacy! This project will help my English Language Learners to become more successful readers and develop a love for reading. These books will give my students opportunities to practice and improve their speaking and reading skills.

My English Language Learners need to become strong readers in kindergarten so we can bridge the gap we see happening in the upper grades.

Learning to read and developing a love for literature are gifts that will enhance their lives far beyond kindergarten. By helping my students become more fluent readers, you will be opening up an entire world to them! These books will be read daily by my English Language Learners and sent home to have them practice with their parents.
