My Students

I teach in an urban school with high poverty (90% receive free/reduced lunch) and a population that includes more than 25% English Language Learners.

Our ELLs (English Language Learners) came to the United States from a wide range of countries like Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Burma, Congo, Nepal, Rwanda, Somalia, and Syria.

The culture of our school encourages students to be active participants in their own education. Although we have challenges to overcome, there is always a positive and open attitude toward learning in our school.

My Project

One accommodation that is allowed and encouraged for our English language learners is the use of a bilingual glossary. These word to word bilingual dictionaries can be used by students to translate individual words between a student's first language and English. They can be of great help, but in our school we don't have them!

The school district recently began an initiative to provide bilingual dictionaries to the freshman class but my 10th graders don't have access to the same resources as their younger peers.

I would like to provide the 10 grade English language learners with the same resources that other students have so that they have the same opportunity for success.
