Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My first two periods of my day are spent with the most brilliant, highly literate group of Spanish speaking students. They have recently arrived to the country and have demonstrated the desire to learn as much English as possible. Many of them have asked for chapter books in Spanish, but our school has a limited and outdated collection of Spanish books. I am asking for you to please, kindly, consider donating fiction books in my students' primary language.

Research shows that students who have a strong first language are more like to transfer those critical thinking skills and faciliate English language aquisition.

By continuing to read in Spanish, students will continue to develop those critical thinking skills that they can easily transfer to all other core classes. I wish you could be in my classroom to witness how much effort these kids put into their learning. They deserve to have books in their hands that will help them reach their potential.

In our classroom, I dedicate time for silent reading to promote a love of literature. With these books, I will make it possible for my Non-English speaking students to partake. I can picture them quietly reading, understanding, and discussing the big ideas in the books they read. This will be the bridge to give them the Academic language to communicate in English.

Mrs. Chamorro will only receive her materials if this project is fully funded by June 20.
