My Students

We are a first grade classroom of 22 students in Alaska. My students attend a diverse neighborhood school of about 260 students. We have no buses; everyone (myself included) lives within walking distance. This helps build a strong sense of community. It is a Title I school, with many students coming from low-income families. Every student can receive free breakfast and lunch.

I want my students to have the same opportunities and learning experiences as other children in an engaging, hands-on environment.

My first graders are thinkers. We shift our focus throughout our day, but they have many roles. I tell them from day 1: You are an artist, an author, an illustrator, a mathematician, a scientist, a friend. They come to school every day seeking a connection and wanting to learn. My students are special because they have a strong desire to do their best every day, even if they come from challenging circumstances.

My Project

My students have several flexible seating options in our classroom, including wobble chairs and soft seats, thanks to a generously funded Donors Choose project. I want to continue to offer alternative seating options that are research-based and support a developmentally-appropriate learning environment. The Bilibo was developed by Zurich University's children's hospital to promote imagination, engage the senses, and support creativity. It also takes balance and coordination to sit in these conical-shaped seats, increasing students' focus and gross-motor skills.

What makes the Bilibo rocking seats unique is their adaptability for various types of activities, including indoor and outdoor play.

My hope is to see students transition fluidly between using Bilibos as a seating option for their academic work and a toy to facilitate creative play. Their simple, dynamic design allows them to function right side up or upside down. I am asking for 4 Bilibo seats to provide an engaging flexible seating option for a small group of students, increasing the opportunity for the seats to be accessible throughout the day. It also will allow students to incorporate multiple Bilibos into their play time activities, whether they are building, spinning, rocking, or more! They are made of thick, durable, recyclable plastic and will be utilized by students for years to come. We are excited by the limitless opportunities that the Bilibo seats will provide!
