My Project

Over the past three years, our after school bike club has grown to over 20 riders. Our student-bike-commuters have overwhelmed our newly installed bike racks during that same time frame. Biking can improve students' focus and cognitive function, leading to better classroom performance and a more engaged learning environment.

I am requesting 28 front/rear lights because – as winter approaches – our student-bikers will soon be on city streets in the dark and increasing their visibility will help to keep them safe.

Students will be able to borrow/exchange these lights at a community charging station. Another safety concern for our students is the mechanical condition of their bikes. Many students have weak brakes, gears that won’t shift, rusty chains, and tires with dry-rot. We need a simple repair stand to both repair bikes and for students to learn how to maintain their own bikes (bike-tools have already been obtained through a separate grant).

With your support for high visibility lights and bikes that are in good working order, our students will be able to continue biking to school and participating in after school club rides straight through the winter!
